balancing between beauty and artivism

I started a project called ‘recuperatheek’ at Sint Lucas Antwerpen School of Arts

I am currently studying for a master’s degree in visual arts in the socio-political context

some things are more precious than stones
Tieke Scheerlinck is a visual artist, an activist, a teacher, a student, a mom.
She started a bachelor’s degree in jewellery at Sint-Lucas Antwerp in 2016 and became a mother for the first time during her studies. Feeling powerless about what was happening in the world and unable to take to the barricades due to her new motherhood, she developed her artistic language through images of resistance and resilience.
Meanwhile, in 2025, she started a master’s degree in visual arts in a socio-political context, with the aim of connecting people through ‘positive artivism’, where political polarization had driven them apart.
She starts from encounters and interviews with people, in order to make a personal little story tangible and universal. Themes that sometimes remain abstract due to dehumanised reporting in the media, such as people fleeing and trauma – both collective and individual – are addressed.
Her work is about connecting people with each other and connecting with yourself.
She describes her work as visual art in the language of jewellery. For her, that language is about contact with the body, value, sparkle, or the jewellery itself.
The materials and forms emerge gradually, so that the final work can be wearable jewellery as well as objects, photographs, videos and installations, made from precious and non-precious metals, precious and semi-precious stones, wood, seeds, wool…
Because the earth’s resources are not inexhaustible, as much attention is paid to finding recycled or natural materials as to the creative process.
As a result of this sustainable focus on raw materials in her work, she started the course ‘recuperatheek’ at Sint-Lucas Antwerp.
It is a shop within the school where students can find recycled raw materials in exchange for their participation.
She teaches them different techniques to recycle waste into new materials themselves.
Becoming a mother for the second time coincided with a divorce and the start of renovating a house on her own, which meant she had to juggle many things at once.
Fortunately, seeing the beauty in things is her greatest talent.

“Tieke Scheerlinck’s work shows us in an uncompromising way how precious life can be. Her work holds up a mirror to society and takes a critical stance on the migration debate. A boat full of refugees, with the significant title ‘precious people’.
At Sint Lucas Antwerp, we are committed to being a warm and inclusive school and we encourage our students to connect with society in a critical and artistic way. This graduation project brings all these aspects together in a powerful, visual, and poetic way.”

Thank you for your interest in my work.
I hope you like my site and the work I’m doing.
As I work on difficult themes such as trauma and human rights, I’m always interested in connecting with people who have other experiences in life than the ones I’ve had.
